Strathmiglo & Gateside Online
Welcome to the Strathmiglo & Gateside web portal
We hope you enjoy learning more about our historic community.
Strathmiglo, affectionately known as ‘Strath' by the locals, has long been linked both economically and via its people, to nearby Falkland Palace. In the 18th and 19th centuries the textile (milling & linen weaving) industry was important, as was boot-making in the 20th century. Today the village is largely a commuting centre for those working in nearby Cupar, St Andrews, Glenrothes and beyond.
The Church and the Tollbooth are attractive & prominent reminders of Strathmiglo's long and colourful history.
Strathmiglo has an existing community website with wonderful old photos of the village. A lesser known fact; Strathmiglo is the ancestral home of Johnny Cash (The American Country & Western Icon).
Gateside lies 2 miles west of Strathmiglo, in the lea of the Lomond Hills. It is by comparison is a much smaller settlement, comprising a school, a pub, a church, a Memorial Village Hall and a garage.
The River Eden runs through the village alongside Gateside Mills, which was once home to large scale linen manufacturing. Today the Mill houses specialist shopping outlets for arts, crafts and furniture.
