Match Report: Strathmiglo United 2 Cupar Hearts 1

From John Schofield, Thursday, 17th April, 2008

Match report by Alastair Jack

Strathmiglo United's fine run of form continued in this Glendale Plastics league mid week match. The contest started at a fast and furious pace, particularly from the visitors, and their efforts were rewarded in the tenth minute when Riley fired them ahead with a well taken goal. Strath almost levelled shotly afterwards, O'Leary was up-ended just inside the "D" and Duncan's free kick flashed over. Twenty minutes later the equaliser did come, Luke headed home a Grant corner kick. The United number six came close to doubling his tally when a long range effort grazed the crosssbar. At the other end Sampson did well to gather a Fraser effort just on the stroke of half time.

The second period started and the pace continued to be unrelenting, and the man in the middle certainly had his work cut out!. On the hour mark Strath scored what turned out to be the decisive goal. O'Leary ignoring the taunts from the visiting touchline, displayed fine skills before passing to Anderson who smashed home a beauty into the postag stamp corner. Just afterwards he was desperately unlucky when he twice hit the upright in the space of five minutes. Cupar's ranks were reduced when McGuire saw red after a second yellow. The ten men battled on and Hutchison's shot whistled past the post. Strath however had the scent of victory in their nostrils and put in a good shift to inflict a first league defeat of the season on a well organised Cupar Hearts team.
