Scottish Disability golf take on challenge at Glenbervie
From Jim Gales,
Thursday, 19th August, 2010
Golfers from the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership (SDGP) took on a challenge, laid down by members of the Glenbervie Golf Club to play a match play competition against their members.
Thirty two players each, from the SDGP and the club, played in a stableford match play event for the inaugural "Challenge Trophy".
"We had never held a competition like this at Glenbervie before so it was a wonderful chance to play such a great course.
"The teams were a good mix of members, our coaches and the club members joining in for what was a fun game of golf and in great sunny weather. "We were delighted to receive this invitation to play at Glenbervie and we think we have proved that anyone with a disability can both play and enjoy the game".
The SDGP is the only golf group in Scotland which actively involves anyone with a disability, serious health problem or mobility issue.
Since its launch in 2006 the Scottish Disability Golf Partnership has provided golf and tuition to hundreds of people with various disabilities, including those with sensory loss, i.e. the blind, vision impaired and the deaf, as well as amputees and those with learning difficulties, other serious health problems or mobility issues.
The SDGP has one more competition in August, and that is at Newmacher Golf Club, before their busiest month since their launch five years ago.
In September the SDGP will host a four-day Open Championship at Scotscraig, several single days competitions and its inaugural 3-day Golf Festival, which includes golf competitions, PGA supervised training and many other facilities.
