Gateside Memorial Hall Official Re-opening: 22 June 2008

From Ewen Jardine, Monday, 23rd June, 2008

The Gateside community celebrated the refurbishment of the Gateside War Memorial Hall on Sunday afternoon.

The weather was fine for the football fun and games in the park that started the afternoon's events.

The hall has been refurbished thanks to a £50,000 grant from the Big Lottery plus funding from from Fife Environment Trust, the Cooperative Community Fund and Fife Council, not to mention a lot of effort from volunteers. National Lottery Plaque

The original hall was built in 1921 as a Memorial to those in the district who died in the World War I. The cost then was £1255. A happy co-incidence is that the original hall was built by the grandfather of the main contractor for the refurbishment, George Cook & Son of Strathmiglo.

Jane McNaughton, Chair of the Community Association, introduced local MP Sir Menzies Campbell, who cut the ribbon and presented the football prizes.

Following the presentations Rev Jim Redpath with assistance from David Cowling rededicated the War Memorial, which has been moved from the recently closed Edenshead Church to the War Memorial Hall. It proved impossible to move the stained glass windowsin the church, which form a memorial to those who died in World War II. Instead, a new plaque has been donated by Dorothy Highland.

Piper Kenny Ferns played the lament "The flowers of the forest" following a minute's silence in remembrance.

The event finished with coffee, tea and biscuits.
