Communities across north east Fife are being invited to take part in Beautiful Scotland's Neighbourhood Awards initiative to help them improve their local environment.
The awards scheme is open to both large and small neighbourhoods and aims to encourage local groups and community groups to improve their streets and green spaces through the use of plants, community involvement, and anti-litter, recycling and waste reduction initiatives.

Groups can get involved in a wide variety of projects, big or small - as long as they benefit local surroundings and can be built on year after year.

Projects could include horticultural initiatives such as the creation of seasonal bedding displays and the imaginative planting of trees and shrubs; projects to reduce vandalism, graffiti, flyposting and litter; and initiatives to encourage recycling and reduction in waste.

Keith Jackson, chairman of the Beautiful Scotland Advisory Group, said taking part had several added benefits.

"Not only does taking part in the awards help to transform the local environment, it's a fantastic way to increase civic pride and make communities better places to live," he said.

"Volunteers also benefit from the physical and mental health aspects of gardening, clean ups and other environmental activities.

"It's hard work, but sociable and fun."

Mr Jackson, who as chairman of Falkland in Bloom led the group to success on the European stage, added: "The awards are also open to community groups who are already brightening up their area with spring and summer floral displays, or keeping it clean and tidy and free from graffiti so the scheme gives you a focus for your efforts."
