Falkland’s Big Book formally handed to Stewards
From Jill Donnachie,
Tuesday, 29th April, 2008
The Big Book of Falkland was formally handed over to the Falkland Stewards this week at a gathering of its contributors in Falkland Village Hall.
The Big Book is a community art project celebrating Falkland's past, present and future. The pages are all hand-made by members of the community, who have been inspired by Falkland, its people and landscape.
Included in the colourful pages are stories and photos of village residents over the centuries, childhood poems, modern-day lyrics, sounds of Falkland and paintings and drawings of the Falkland landscape. In fact the Big Book's pages are as diverse at the contributors themselves - a testament to the number of groups and residents who care about the burgh and want to be part of its history.
The Big Book's stunning cover is handcrafted from native Scottish hardwoods by local craftsman Dave McKeen. It has a fold-away stand that will enable the Book to remain mobile, and Falkland Stewards plan to make it available for local organisations and groups to borrow and display. Hopefully it will generate interest and enthusiasm in Falkland's heritage, as well as being a source of pleasure and pride!
Thanks to its many contributors including
- Falkland Nursery
- the playgroup
- the art class
- the WRI
- Falkland Society
- the Wednesday night folk session at The Stag Inn
- Sustainable Falkland project
- plus numerous enthusiastic residents
If you have a story connected with Falkland which you'd like to see in the Book, all is not lost.
It is a work in progress and there will undoubtedly be opportunities to tell your Falkland story in the future. Oh and we hope to have at least some of its pages visible on-line shortly too. watch this space.
The Big Book is a Falkland Stewards project, funded by Awards for All.
