Match Report: Bowhill Rovers 4 - 1 Strathmiglo United
From John Schofield,
Monday, 12th May, 2008
Strath's attempt to make it to three cup finals this season failed at the last hurdle when they suffered a humiliating defeat in the semi-final of the Scottish Brewers Cup.
Straight from the off Bowhill looked the hungrier team whilst Strath looked strangely lethargic and on the fifteen minute mark Kinnell headed home Moffat's corner kick to open the scoring. The visitor's attempts to play football were thwarted by the home teams "Up and (sometimes dubious) at 'em tactics and their cause was not helped any as Williamson and Nicoll were forced to retire injured. On the half hour Bowhill compounded United's misery when unchallenged Bennett lobbed in goal number two. Just prior to the interval with the makeshift Strath defence at sixes and sevens Baird hit home a third!.
The half time team talk spurred Strath as they tried to get back into things. Keeper Dewar denied O'Leary twice, Allan and Darren Baillie both headed wide of the mark. Rovers were not to be undone however and Strath were caught on the break by Moffat when he notched their fourth after a fine solo run. Strath then lost the services of Gay through injury as their day went from bad to worse!. In the closing stages , after Bowhill's Dewar had been red carded for a red mist moment, Finlay had an effort that hit woodwork before he netted a consolation goal from the penalty spot. Strath will no doubt feel aggrieved with the result and whilst they might have a genuine grouse about the manner in which the match was officiated and the loss of key players through injury, they can have no complaints about the sloppy defending at the first three goals that ensured Bowhill's place in the final.
Team: Sampson, Rennie, Patrick, Gay (Dewar), Williamson, (Hutt), Luke, Duncan, Nicoll (Allan), Finlay, D.Baillie, O'Leary, Unused Sub L.Baillie.
