Fife Show set to stay in Cupar

From Fife Today, Friday, 23rd May, 2008

THE Fife Show is going from strength to strength with another successful year at Kinloss and Kilmaron making it extremely likely that the event will stay in Cupar for the forseeable future. Organiser Louise Roger, secretary of the Fife Agricultural Association, said she had been delighted with last weekend's event.

After five years at the site, she said she was hopeful the lease would be extended for another five.

With around 7000 visitors flocking to Cupar on Saturday traffic chaos may have been foreseen, but Louise said that due to the large amount of parking available there were no problems reported.

Once again the main arena was the focus of attraction with a vintage tractor parade held to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Fordson Dexta.

The event, which also coincided with the 50 year of the Massey Ferguson amalgamation, gave visitors young and old the chance to wonder at the evolution of the machine over the years, particularly with their state-of-the-art counterparts standing just feet away in the trade stand area.

The main arena also showcased the heavy horse turnouts which drew a large number of people, only to have to be cut slightly short by the unexpectedly early arrival of the skydiving team.

There were plenty of activities for all the family going on during the day from numerous equestrian events to terrier racing, clay pigeon shooting and a dog show in the game fair area, plus the crowd-pleasing tractor pulling championships.

The display by Phoenix Falconry drew the crowds as the huge birds of prey swooped across the sky - one even landing in the roof of Kinloss House!

One again the ferret racing, provided by Derek Davidson of Kennoway, proved to be a popular attraction with much excitement being generated as the furry animals wriggled their way through plastic tubes egged on by the crowd.

Louise said: "We had a very high standard of entries in the poultry, cattle, goats and sheep sections, and I'm pleased to say there were many local winners.

"We also had a record-breaking number of trade stands and the winner was Sellars Agriculture Ltd. from Cupar.

"We also noticed that we had a great number of visitors from outwith north east Fife and this is something we hope to build on in future years."
