Freuchie's Celebratory Cricket Match

From Ewen Jardine, Monday, 6th September, 2010

On Sunday 5th September, Freuchie Cricket Club celebrated their 25 year-old victory over Rowledge in the National Village Championship at Lords Cricket Ground.

Ming Campbell & Bob Macfarlane at Freuchie Cricket groundBilled Freuchie's Glorious Weekend, activities & celebrations were opened by local MP Sir Menzies Campbell and Bob McFarlane, President of Cricket Scotland. Most of Freuchie turned out to commemorate the day these 13 local legends put the village on the map including members of the 13-man team from 1985, who gathered to watch TV footage of their momentous win and view the current Freuchie side play a celebratory 20:20 match against their local rivals Falkland.

The 1985 team captain, David Christie, 73, a retired painter and decorator who still lives in the village and works as the club's groundsman, said he was "thrilled" to be reunited with his 1985 team mates on the nearest Sunday to their historic match.

"The final at Lord's was the greatest moment of my life as far as sport goes," he said. "Nobody gave us a chance, and when we won the semi-final against a very good side from Derbyshire we were still just excited about the prospect of playing at Lord's. But as the big day approached our attitudes changed. We weren't just going there to play a game - we wanted to win.

Nobody gave us a chance, but we gave the English a shock. The celebrations afterwards were terrific."

This time Freuchie were set a total of 138 runs to beat - on September 1st 1985 Rowledge set them 134.

Freuchie just held their nerve to edge out Falkland in the final. Blair Forrester scored the winning boundary with two overs and seven wickets to spare.

Well done once again Freuchie!
