A campaign group has demanded that money be spent upgrading one of the main trunk roads through Fife.

The recently-formed Glenrothes Area Futures Group has said it will campaign to the Scottish Government to have the A92 dualled around the town.

Recent remedial work on the stretch between the Prestonhall roundabout and the Balfarg junction meant the road was closed for about four weeks.

Transport bosses have said they will consider all road and rail networks.

The campaign group has started a petition and believes it has strong local support.

It is made up of representatives from community councils, churches, tenants and residents groups.

Spokesman Ron Page said: "Motorists became incensed with the four week closure of part of the local A92 and were diverted through various parts of Glenrothes town centre, with the inevitable grid locking.

"We reckon that motorists all over Fife know this stretch of the A92 at Glenrothes and will keenly support our petition now. Who knows when the next patching of this part of the A92 will take place?"

'Increased capacity'

A spokesman for Transport Scotland said: "The Strategic Transport Projects Review (STPR) will consider the requirements of the road and rail networks within the nationally strategic transport corridors which serve Fife.

"It will take account of the importance to Fife of having good road and rail connectivity between these corridors.

"Transport Scotland is currently examining future investment needs for the whole Scottish transport network, including the Edinburgh to Dundee strategic transport corridor which includes the A92."

The spokesman said they were also working with their partners and stakeholders to restructure and improve the rail timetable through Fife, which they claimed would bring considerable benefits to local service users.
