What's happening with food in Fife?
The simple answer is loads!
There are websites aplenty with information on food in Fife and further afield. Here are a few food initiatives close to home which you may want to check out.
- The Fife Diet - a network of local people committed to eating as much food from Fife as they can. In 2007 it was a local eating 'experiment'. Now it has over 1000 members, funding and staff and is aiming to localise food consumption. The group works with community organisations to explore sustainable food initiatives. There's heaps of info on this blog - well worth a look.
- One Planet Food - a Centre for Stewardship based initiative to encourage a sustaainable, healthy and inclusive food culture across Scotland. Gives advice and encouragement to local food initiatives and develops regional policies to promote sustainable food systems.
- Fife Food Network - set up in 2010 to promote and develop the quality food and drink found in the area. The network includes primary producers, food busineses, retail outlets, markets, shops and deli's and the hospitality trade.
- Slow Food Fife - Established in Aug 08, this group of Fife food enthusiasts promote slow food and organise events for the exchange information about good food and drink in the area.
- WECAN! "Food for Fife" Project - supports local community groups in establishing new food initiatives which are aimed at tackling inequalities in diet and health.
Food events
- Newburgh Orchard Group run a series of apple and plum markets every Saturday from 9.30 to 12.30 in Newburgh from the end August through Oct (depending on the crop). Watch the calendar for updates on these.
- Apple Day: Lochore Meadows; 16 Oct 2010. Apple identification advice, apple juicing (bring your own apples into fresh juice), cider making course and more
- Falkland Palace Apple Day; 17 Oct 2010. Bring your own apples for pressing and have a nosey around the palace orchard.
- Slow Food Fife organise regular events in the area. Watch the events calendar for these and more local food events.

- What's on your PLATE? - the campaign for Scottish food and farming with info on what's in season, favourite recipes and more.
- Healthyliving Award - award scheme designed to make it easier for all of us to eat more healthily when we eat out by clearly identifying healthier food on the menu.
- Slow Food Edinburgh - Slow Food Fife's sister group. Promotes an attitude to food which values locally grown produce, eating food in season, small-scale artisan producers and non-industrialized farming
- Fairtrade UK - with news of Fairtrade events, schools, retail products and wholesale suppliers in Scotland and beyond
- Soil Association Scotland - an environmental charity which promotes sustainable, organic farming and healthy eating. Find out which farms and suppliers are certified organic by the soil association and where to buy local, organic food throughout Scotland
- Farm Shop UK - directory of farm shops and facilities around Scotland plus events, recipes and more
- Veg Box Recipes - full of recipes that work with veg boxes, farm shops, farmers' markets and allotments.
- Eat Scotland - the Visit Scotland guide to eating and drinking in Scotland
- Scottish Food in Season - highlights the quality in Scotland's natural ingredients, links this through to suppliers, delis, producers, farmers' markets and shops, and then to plate (recipes etc).
- Forth Valley Food Links - the latest news and information on developments towards a sustainable local food economy for the Forth Valley area of Scotland
- Health promoting schools - Scotland's school dinners are improving to provide children with the best possible start in life and help them develop healthy eating habits that will last a lifetime
- Food and Health Alliance - managed by NHS Health Scotland and supported by the Scottish Executive and Food Standards Agency Scotland, this network represents the range of stakeholders involved in implementing a multi-sector, food-chain based food and health strategy.
