Slow Food Fife organise regular events in the area. Watch the events calendar for these and more local food happenings.

Fife has one of the best natural larders in the world, producing quality seafood, lamb, game, dairy, fruit and vegetables all year round.

FarmingThe 'Howe' (an old Scots word meaning hollow valley or tract of land) lies in the valley of the River Eden between Gateside & Cupar.

It is the fertile interior of Fife region with a heritage rich in food and agriculture, that has shaped the landscape and the local economy for the last 100 years and more. Needless to say the Howe is renowned for the quality of its produce.

As well as farms and other primary producers of food, the Howe is also home to some great food retailers, cafés, farm shops, restaurants and markets. All of which contribute to the local economy and make buying and eating quality local produce easy peasy.

If you're not a regular consumer of quality local produce, you're definitely missing out!

Why buy local?

Buying local is simply buying food produced, grown, or raised as close to your home as possible. There are many good reasons for trying to do more of this:

  • Buying locally produced food helps producers in the region maintain a well established rural way of life
  • It gives the economy a much needed boost by keeping money within the community, sustaining local businesses and creating jobs for people who live here
  • Locally produced food has travelled fewer miles to reach us - this means a smaller carbon footprint & less environmental pollution
  • It may also be fresher, healthier and more nutritious, having been spared lengthy periods of storage, chilling and travel
  • Culturally, local food has its own ‘story', bringing a shared meaning at mealtimes and a deeper connection to the land.

In short, buying and eating local is environmentally friendly, healthy and fun!

Because food is so important to the lives of many living in the Howe, we've dedicated a number of pages on this portal to talking about it. Click on the questions below on to find out more, and please tell us if there's anything wrong / new you'd like to see here.
