Match Report: Cupar Hearts 1-1 Strath United (AET Strath won 4-2 on penalties)
From John Schofield, SUAFC,
Monday, 9th June, 2008
Strath should have taken an early lead in the M H Engineering League Cup Final.
McIntosh took advantage of a mix up in Hearts defence to set up the chance for Liam Baillie who blasted over with the goal at his mercy!. Cupar then pressurised the United defence and Sampson did well to stop efforts from Halley and hutcheon before they took the lead on the twenty minute mark. Oliphant providing the cross for McGuire to blast home. Shortly afterwards hearts might have increased their lead when a fine run by Pryde culminated in the winger being denied by the upright. Strath fought their way back into things and equalised just prior to the interval, Williamson knocked down to Luke who crossed for Liam Baillie to head strogly into the net.
Hearts started the second period brightly but created little in the way of scoring chances. Strath settled and came back again but like Cupar could not create scoring opportunities. With the clock tickingon and both sides looking for a winner the keepers were finally called into action. Sampson had a super save from Hutcheon and Sharp blocked shots from O'Leary and Herd before the referee brought the regulation ninety minutes to a halt.
In the first period of extra time the teams could still not be separated and near the end of the fifteen minutesan extraordinary incident occurred. The referee waived away Cupar's claims for a spot kick after McGuire had taken a tumble. The linesman however kept his flag aloft and after a consultation not only did the man in the middle reverse his decision and award a spot kick he brandished the red card to Strath boss Moggach for his protestations!. After a long delay Cupar keeper Sharp took the kick but blasted over the bar. Before play could resume the linesman once again made his presence felt when he ensured Darren Baillie was also red carded for his "off the cuff" comments.
United's ten men fought bravely through the second period of extra time and right at the finale O'Leary's effort was saved by Sharp.
In the penalty shoot out Sampson was the hero for Strathmiglo when he saved a couple of kicks to ensure his side lifted the silverware.
So despite his enforced removal from the touchline Moggach managed his team to the League Cup-- Well done Keegs -- and well done the "Mighty Miglo".
