The Idea

Letham Village Hall - home to Letham NightsIn association with the North Howe Transition Toun movement and with the support of a Culture Grant from Fife Council, Letham Village Hall Committee has launched a new community venture to bring high quality music and entertainment to the village hall and provide a platform for the development of local talent.

In the process, funds are being raised to reduce the carbon footprint of the Village Hall and lower energy costs. It is this combination of having great fun and lowering our community carbon footprint that gives Letham Nights its unique ethos.

The Clap & Tipple

While the music plays and people dance, they need refreshment. And what better way to get this than from 'The Clap & Tipple', Letham Nights' own bar which was inspired by the Transition Toun movement's "Transition Tavern".  It offers drinks and snacks from as locally as humanly possible, in keeping with the philosophy of the Transition Toun movement.

Cairn o Mhor fruit winesThe highlights of the bar are a wide range of local and/or organic ales, wines from local supplier Luvians and Cairn O' Mhor and apple and raspberry juice from the Carse of Gowrie.

And although some of the bands appear to be not very local (Chicago, Melbourne!) we are managing to influence them with our ethos - so much so that the Black Oil Brothers intend to set up a Transition Toun group in their local area!

Previous Performances

Starting in December 2008, the first band to headline at Letham Nights were the Moonzie Allstars who attracted a big crowd to listen and dance the night away to their lively folk-world fusion. That set the scene for what was to come. In February 2009, in a packed village hall, there was an outstanding performance from the 2008 winner of the Traditional Young Musician of the Year Award, Ewan Robertson on his Spring Tour with singer-songwriter Ewan McPherson. That evening also witnessed the birth of a new star, Becky Gowans, who at only 15, blew the audience away with her raw natural talent. In March, veteran blues band Wolftrain, steamed into town, ably supported by the Anthill Mob and we were treated to a night of footstomping blues and rock ‘n' roll. On 4th April Lochgelly-based indie rock band, Ambulances, treated us to another cracking gig to launch their new album ‘The Future That Was', recorded in Creich in only 8 days and produced by legendary American producer, Kramer.

Then on 2nd May2009, all the way from Chicago, the Black Oil Brothers played the first gig of their UK tour with support form the Black Cat Jook Band. It was a triumph! Our US guests were as much captivated by Letham as we were by their wonderful Delta Blues, so much so they returned again in May 2010!
