The Falkland Centre for Stewardship (part of Falkland Heritage Trust) is responsible for the care and revival of the Grade A House of Falkland with its arts & crafts interiors and designed landscape.
About the House
Built between 1839 and 1844 by William Burn, one of the pre-eminent Victorian country house architects, it provides a rich tableau for craft researchers to investigate and explore the indigenous techniques employed by craft artisans in the past, and to understand their aesthetic importance to our lives. It is currently the subject of a five year research study by the University of Dundee called 'Past, Present and Future Craft Practice: exploration of the interrelations between skill, intent, and culture'.
Since 1981, the House of Falkland has been occupied by Falkland House School who have shown great care and attention to it.
Restoring the House to its former gory is however an ongoing challenge, and raising the many millions of pounds required to complete this work, a long-term goal for such a small charity. Over the next few years the Trust aims to increase access to, and the no. of, events held in the House, in order to begin a process of fully restoring several heritage rooms to their original condition. We therefore welcome enquiries from organisations or groups of all sizes who are interested in tailor-made tours of the House and/or its designed landscape. If interested, please contact Lesley on 01337 858838 or lesley@centreforstewardship.org.uk.
