- Would you like to know more about where your food comes from?
- Are you interested in traditional food and drink from other areas?
- Would you like to be part of the international Slow Food movement?
Then please come along to a free ‘Introduction to Slow Food' event on 5th August in Cupar.
What is Slow Food?
Slow Food works internationally to promote food that is Good, Clean and Fair by spreading taste education, defending biodiversity and connecting producers with co-producers, and enggaing the youth to shape the future of Slow Food.
The Slow Food movement began in 1989 when an Italian journalist, Carlo Petrini, became concerned that a global takeover of industrialised, standardised fast food was well on the way - and it could be the beginning of the end for the huge variety of good, traditional, regional Italian food. He decided that it was necessary to set up a Slow Food movement to counteract the potential for 'fast food' world domination.
Since the 1980s, Slow Food has become an international organisation of 86,000 members in 130 countries who not only care about enjoying and retaining our diverse heritage of regional food and drink, and protecting it from unthinking globalisation, but are increasingly aware of the associated environmental issues.
What is a Slow Food Convivium?
The local branch, or 'Convivium' is the grassroots heart of Slow Food. It organises a variety of events such as tastings, dinners with a particular theme, and visits to places of food and drink interest. Education is an important purpose for a convivium. The convivium also collects information about regional food and drink, whether it be good shops or restaurants, or food and drink products under threat - and passes on this information to Slow Food members worldwide. Conviviality and enjoying yourself are essential features of Slow Food membership!
Slow Food in Fife
There are currently eight Slow Food convivia in Scotland (including Aberdeenshire, Ayrshire, Glasgow, Edinburgh and Perth). With increasing interest in local food, we are now looking at the possibility of setting up a Slow Food Convivium for Fife. We hope that this group will bring together like-minded people, organise events and exchange information about good food and drink in the area.
We intend holding a free ‘Introduction to Slow Food' event on Tuesday 5th of August at 7pm at the Fisher and Donaldson's bakery and restaurant at 1 Ceres Road, Cupar, KT15 5JT. The evening will include a chance to sample some of Fisher and Donaldsons finest produce, a talk by Donald Reid (food journalist and Leader of the Edinburgh Slow Food Convivium), and cookery demonstrations and tastings by well-known local chef and author Christopher Trotter.
- If you would like to come along - please reserve your free place by contacting us before Thursday 31st July. Please also let us know if you have any special dietary requirements.
This event is supported by the Association of Businesses in Cupar and District.
