Excessive speed targeted near Letham crossroads

From Fife Direct News, Thursday, 1st May, 2008

In an issue that is close to the hearts of anyone living in and around Letham, officers of Fife Constabulary alongside the Fife Safety Camera Partnership have been monitoring driver behaviour on main rural routes in North East Fife.

On Friday, 25th April, a unit of the Fife Safety Camera Partnership was deployed on the A92 Kirkcaldy to Dundee road near to Letham Crossroads. The unit began operation at 5.30am and went on to detect 32 drivers travelling in excess of the 60mph speed limit, with 5 drivers travelling at speeds in excess of 80mph.

Andy Jones manager of the Fife Safety Camera Partnership said   "Our units will be taking advantage of the early morning light on a number of rural and urban routes by deploying as early as 0430hrs.  These will be routes where early morning collisions and instances of high speed are prevalent.  This is all about making best use of intelligence and directing resources to where they are most effective"

On Saturday, 26th April, a 17yr old Crail youth was stopped driving his car on the A91 Guardbridge to St Andrews road by uniformed officers on patrol. He was driving at an alleged speed of 85mph in the 60mph limit. He admitted to officers that he had passed his test only 4 days previously. He is to be reported to the Procurator Fiscal at Cupar for speeding and other minor road traffic offences.   Supt. Bill Lawrie, Eastern Divisions Divisional Commander said of this case "Young drivers are our communities most vulnerable road users with excessive speed often being a contributory factor to serious and fatal road crashes. This is a reminder to newly qualified drivers that passing a test gives them a full driving licence but experience and learning continue well after passing a test and that adherence to speed limits and regulations enhance theirs and other road users safety".
