Education in Collessie & Letham, Bow of Fife Online

Pre school Education

Letham is home to The Secret Garden - Britain's first outdoor nursery. There are also a number of independent childminders and qualified childcare providers operating in the area. Seach the directory below for their contact details or see Scottish Childcare for more on local area childcare, events and activities.

Primary Education

Letham Primary SchoolLetham Primary is situated at the top of School Brae (and the summit of 36 steps!) The main building is over 130 years old and built mainly from sandstone which was quarried only 200 metres away from the school.  Letham primary serves the villages of Letham, Collessie, Bow of Fife and surrounds. Pupils from outside the village travel to and from school in a mini-bus.

The average roll of around 36 pupils aged 5 to 12 years, is split into two multi-composite classes, with a full-time Classroom Assistant based in the younger class. There is no nursery at Letham, pre-school children from the area travel to nearby Ladybank Primary. The school aims to provide our pupils with an enjoyable educational experience; to give them a firm foundation of learning and to equip them to cope with the demands and challenges of adult life. Letham Primary is very much part of the local community and works closely with parents, all of whom are members of the PTA. The PTA is involved in many aspects of school life as well as organising fundraising and social events. 2008 school term dates.

Alternatively St Columba's RC Primary School serves the Catholic community of Cupar and the Howe.

Secondary education

Children completing primary education usually choose to go to Bell Baxter High School in Cupar or St Andrew's RC High Scool in Kirkcaldy.
Download school bus timetables for travel to and from Letham, Collessie & Bow to Bell Baxter.

There are also fee-paying schools in St. Andrews, Perth and Dundee.

Howe of Fife Learning Centre

Nearby Auchtermuchty is home to the Howe of Fife Learning Centre, a community education initiative managed by Elmwood College. The centre provides equipment and tuition and enables people in rural communities to study close to home and at convenient times. There are a wide range of mainly IT courses available, from computer basics to advanced certificates - perfect for honing your computer skills so you can email photos and update this site!

Further & Higher Education

Local colleges include Fife's Elmwood College in Cupar and Adam Smith College in Glenrothes/Kirkcaldy. Carnegie College in Dunfermline and Perth College are also approx 30 minute drive away.

University education is provided at nearby St. Andrews (Fife's only university and Scotland' first), Dundee and Abertay (Dundee). Alternatively the Open University of Scotland provides flexible support, tailored to the needs of the individual student and their area of study and is ideally suited to those based rurally.

Lifelong Learning

The Adult Basic Education Service in Fife provides free tuition for adults wanting to improve their basic skills in reading, writing, spelling, arithmetic and basic maths. Alternatively check out the range of courses on offer in your local library. Learning doesn't just have to be about formal qualifications, you can develop a personal interest or hobby, learn new skills, brush up on old ones, or just have fun too.
