Bow of Fife, Collessie & Letham

Welcome to the Bow of Fife, Collessie & Letham web portal

Bow of Fife, Collessie & Letham (including Monimail) are 3 small villages, located not far off the A92 around 5 miles west of Cupar. Though they are neighbours and share community resources, each settlement has its own history and character.

Bow of Fife

A much smaller hamlet than Collessie & Letham, Bow of Fife lies on a bend of the Daft Burn which flows southwards to meet the River Eden. It is home to a few houses, a Post Office and has a red-spired church (the disused Monimail Free Church of 1897-8) as its most prominent landmark. View Fife webcam overlooking Bow towards Ladybank.

Collessie

A conservation village and winner of Fife Council's Best Kept Hamlet award, this pretty village was once home to weavers and a railway but now attracts artists, families and those looking for a rural lifestyle.

Collessie Parish church which stands at the highest point in the village is an important historical landmark and the well-maintained Collessie Victory Hall provides a focal point for many local activities.  Other points of interest include a standing stone with an incised carving of a warrior in the fields to the East of village and Stoneline Designs, a Celtic & Pictish art studio with a small local history exhibition, housed in an old, converted 18th century washhouse.

Letham

According to the 2001 Census, Letham has 138 residents in over 60 dwellings. This has undoubtedly increased over the last 9 years, the rural idyll of the quiet countryside attracting more families and professionals to settle here. Letham Primary School educates around 40 pupils from Collessie, Bow and the surrounds, and together with the Village Hall, it forms the heart of the community. Letham old village is approached via a row of pretty 18th and 19th century cottages, some of which still have original signage above their doors.

The largest business in the area is sand and gravel extraction from nearby Mountcastle Quarry. Local affairs are handled by the Monimail Community Council and Letham and Monimail share their own informative community website. Visitors to the area should note, they are travelling in / to Fife not Forfar, Dundee or Perth (home to 3 very different 'Letham's'!)

Monimail

Monimail lies west of Letham en route to Collessie.

It is home to the historic Melville House (now a private residence) and a recently restored medieval Monimail Tower that once formed part of a summer palace used by the ancient bishops of St Andrews.

The tower was bought in ruins in 1985 by a group of Edinburgh psychotherapists as a therapeutic retreat. Today the Monimail Tower Project is an environmental charity, which aims to provide horticultural education and to work with people who are undergoing mental stress.

Of course there's much more going on in the community...and Smart Community Fife urges you to share information with your neighbours via this portal.
