Auchtermuchty Common Update
From Heather Winship, Macduff Trust,
Tuesday, 10th June, 2008
On Sunday, the Scottish Wildlife Trust enjoyed a walk around the common. To our delight we saw eight Small Pearl-bordered Fritillaries, Peacock and Small Copper butterflies and a Latticed Heath moth. Birds observed were stonechats, yellow hammer, whitethroats, buzzard and kestrel. There are many flowers blooming including the sweet scented burnet roses, rock rose, Star of Bethlehem and Ladies Bedstraw. Gordon Corbett, Fife's insect recorder discovered a beautiful lacewing, click beetle and a parasitic wasp.
All muchty residents are invited to attend the Macduff Trust's forthcoming AGM on Thursday 19th June at the Upper Town Hall at 7pm. This will be your opportunity to discuss the management of the common with the Trust. There will be a guest speaker from RSPB giving a talk on the Sea Eagle project.
Forthcoming events on the common include a Moth trapping night on Thursday 13th June on the Whitefield which will begin at 9.30pm with identification on Saturday at 11am.
It's willowherb time again, this invasive american plant is threatening our own native flowers and we will be tackling it and Ragwort on Saturday 5th July 11-2pm. All help gratefully received with delicious home baking.
