Lomond United players to take on Polish pro team

From BBC News Scotland, Monday, 30th June, 2008

Players from Lomond United in Falkland, Fife, will take on Chelmianka of Chelmno in the third division team's first pre-season friendly.

It came about when one of the Polish side's players, Wotjek Jicki, joined Lomond after moving to Fife to pay for medical treatment for his brother.

Lomond had to consult Fifa before Jicki could play. He has now returned home.

When he joined the amateur side, he made a promise that Lomond could play a friendly against Chelmianka when he returned to Poland.

Loan deal

After two seasons, Jicki will play his last game for Lomond for the encounter in Poland on Saturday, before he rejoins his original club.

Chelmianka play in the Polish third division.

The Lomond United team are flying out from Edinburgh. Two of the players, who are planning to marry their fiancees in the next month, are turning the adventure into a joint stag weekend.

Player Alistair McBain told the BBC Scotland news website: "It is just unbelievable.

"It's been planned for a long time. It's coinciding with two stag dos and it will be great.

"He came across because his little brother is not well. He has just gone back and part of the deal was that when he went back we would get to play against them."
