Entertainment in Auchtermuchty & Dunshalt Online
Culture plays a large part in the lives of many Howe communities, but nowhere is it more visible or accessible than Auchtermuchty, where live theatre and quality music are delivered regularly to a willing audience.
| Sadly the Auchtermuchty Festival is over for another year. Thanks to the marquee, musicians, dancers & diddlers it won't be one anyone will forget for a while! See the 2008 Festival photos. |
Music
Muchty has long been synonymous with folk music and it's great to see the Early Learning Ceilidh Band, who do much of their practising in the Dunshalt Village Hall, coaching and supporting young people in traditional Scottish music.
In addition to the week of full-on community fun that is the Auchtermuchty Festival, the committee run a series of Traditional Music Workshops in partnership with Elmwood College. These are advertised on the Muchty events calendar for those who are interested.
Of course Auchtermuchty's most famous son was Sir Jimmy Shand, the popular and highly respected accordion player and band leader. He lived from 1908 to 2000 and is remembered by his statue in the village.
His son Jimmy Shand Junior and his trio of musicians still regularly play in Collessie's Victory Hall.
Theatre
The Auchtermuchty Theatre Group manage the annual Pantomime, which is Dick Whittington for 2008. Watch out for tickets in November. The drama section of the group continue to produce great plays including recent performances: The Twits - a youth prduction; The 3 Buchaveneers - a united production with the Orwell Dramatic Society and Leslie Amateur Dramatic Club; and ‘Any Thane Goes' - a Marx Brothers style comedy based on Shakespeare's Macbeth.
Both groups regularly perform to full houses and are highly valued for the entertainment they provide ‘by the people of the village for the people of the village' - though nowadays Muchty is really a town!
Of course there's regular entertainment in the form of the Cycle Tavern's monthly pub quiz as well as regular music, dancing and fun at the Auchtermuchty Bowling Club.
Further afield
Of course there's plenty of theatre, dance, music and art on offer further afield in Fife:
- at the Byre Theatre and Younger Hall in St Andrews;
- the Adam Smith Theatre, Kirkcaldy
- Rothes Halls, Glenrothes
- Carnegie Hall, Dunfermline and
- Lochgelly Centre, Lochgelly.
Cinema goers should check out the Adam Smith Theatre in Kirkcaldy, The New Picture House in St Andrews and the Odeon in Dunfermline
